Mǎn zhāo sǔn, qiān shòu yì

"Pride invites loss, humility receives benefit"

宰相肚里好撑船

拔苗助长

Bá miáo zhù zhǎng

"Pulling up shoots to help them grow"

清明前后,种瓜点豆

Qīngmíng qiánhòu, zhòng guā diǎn dòu

"Around Qingming Festival, plant melons and sow beans"

敏而好学,不耻下问

Mǐn ér hào xué, bù chǐ xià wèn

"Quick-minded and loving to learn, not ashamed to ask those below"

萝卜白菜,各有所爱

"Prescribe medicine according to the symptoms, cut clothes according to the body"

有理不在声高

Yǒu lǐ bù zài shēng gāo

"Being right doesn't depend on having a loud voice"

河有两岸,事有两面

Hé yǒu liǎng àn, shì yǒu liǎng miàn

"A river has two banks; a matter has two sides"

江山易改,禀性难移

Jiāng shān yì gǎi, bǐng xìng nán yí

"Rivers and mountains are easy to change; inherent nature is hard to shift"

江海所以能为百谷王

路不行不到,事不为不成

擀面杖吹火——一窍不通

Gǎn miàn zhàng chuī huǒ — yī qiào bù tōng

"Blowing fire through a rolling pin — not a single opening works"

绳锯木断,水滴石穿

Shéng jù mù duàn, shuǐ dī shí chuān

"The rope saw cuts through wood; water drops wear through stone"

朽木不可雕也

Xiǔ mù bù kě diāo yě

"Rotten wood cannot be carved"

君不密则失臣,臣不密则失身

Jūn bù mì zé shī chén, chén bù mì zé shī shēn

"If a ruler is not discreet, they lose their ministers; if a minister is not discreet, they lose their life"

谣言止于智者

Yáoyán zhǐ yú zhìzhě

"Rumors stop at the wise person"

圣人无常心,以百姓心为心

Shèng rén wú cháng xīn, yǐ bǎi xìng xīn wéi xīn

"The Sage has no fixed heart; takes the people's heart as their own"

不是一家人,不进一家门

Búshì yījiārén, bú jìn yījiāmén

"If not family, one doesn't enter the same door"

士为知己者死,女为悦己者容

Shì wèi zhījǐ zhě sǐ, nǚ wèi yuè jǐ zhě róng

"A scholar dies for the one who truly understands him; a woman adorns herself for the one who appreciates her"

秀才遇到兵——有理说不清

Xiùcai yù dào bīng — yǒu lǐ shuō bù qīng

"A scholar meets a soldier — having reason, cannot make it heard"

苟且偷生

Gǒuqiě tōushēng

"To drag out an ignoble existence; to live on in degradation"

法不传六耳

Fǎ bù chuán liù ěr

"Secrets should not pass six ears"

见贤思齐焉,见不贤而内自省也

Jiàn xián sī qí yān, jiàn bù xián ér nèi zì xǐng yě

"When you see a worthy person, think of emulating them; when you see an unworthy person, examine yourself inwardly"

百闻不如一见

Bǎi wén bù rú yī jiàn

"Direct experience outweighs secondhand knowledge"

欲求生富贵,须下死功夫

Yù qiú shēng fùguì, xū xià sǐ gōngfu

"If you want living wealth and honor, you must put in deadly effort"

知恩图报

Zhī ēn tú bào

"Know the favor, plan to repay it"

以身作则

Yǐ shēn zuò zé

"Lead by example; set the standard with your own conduct"

有福同享,有难同当

Yǒu fú tóng xiǎng, yǒu nàn tóng dāng

"Share blessings together, bear hardships together"

磨刀不误砍柴工

Mó dāo bú wù kǎn chái gōng

"Sharpening the axe does not delay the woodcutting work"

工欲善其事,必先利其器

Gōng yù shàn qí shì, bì xiān lì qí qì

"If a craftsman wants to do his work well, he must first sharpen his tools"

沉默是金

chén mò shì jīn

"Silence is golden"

不鸣则已,一鸣惊人

Bù míng zé yǐ, yī míng jīng rén

"Silent until the moment of spectacular revelation"

既来之,则安之

Jì lái zhī, zé ān zhī

"Since you have come, be at peace with it"

精诚所至,金石为开

Jīng chéng suǒ zhì, jīn shí wéi kāi

"Where utmost sincerity arrives, metal and stone open."

独木不成林,单丝不成线

Dú mù bù chéng lín, dān sī bù chéng xiàn

"A single tree doesn't make a forest; a single thread doesn't make a line"
