傻人有傻福

Shǎ rén yǒu shǎ fú

"Simpletons have simpleton's luck; fools are blessed"

尺有所短,寸有所长

Chǐ yǒu suǒ duǎn, cùn yǒu suǒ cháng

"Everyone has strengths and weaknesses"

强扭的瓜不甜

Qiǎng niǔ de guā bù tián

"A forcibly twisted melon is not sweet"

福祸相依

fú huò xiāng yī

"Good fortune and misfortune depend on each other"

狐假虎威

Hú jiǎ hǔ wēi

"The fox exploits the tiger's ferocity"

莫逆之交

Mò nì zhī jiāo

"A friendship without opposition or conflict"

小人之交甘若醴

Xiǎorén zhī jiāo gān ruò lǐ

"The friendship of small men is sweet as sweet wine"

以势交者,势倾则绝;以利交者,利穷则散

Yǐ shì jiāo zhě, shì qīng zé jué; yǐ lì jiāo zhě, lì qióng zé sàn

"Those who befriend through power, when power falls, the friendship ends; those who befriend through profit, when profit is exhausted, they scatter"

由俭入奢易,由奢入俭难

Yóu jiǎn rù shē yì, yóu shē rù jiǎn nán

"Going from frugality to luxury is easy; going from luxury to frugality is hard"

井底之蛙

Jǐng dǐ zhī wā

"The frog at the bottom of the well"

一瓶子不响,半瓶子晃荡

Yī píngzi bù xiǎng, bàn píngzi huàngdang

"A full bottle makes no sound; a half-full bottle sloshes around"

满瓶不动半瓶摇

Mǎn píng bù dòng bàn píng yáo

"A full bottle stays still; a half-full bottle shakes"

饱汉不知饿汉饥

Bǎo hàn bù zhī è hàn jī

"The well-fed man does not know the hungry man's hunger"

尽信书,则不如无书

Jìn xìn shū, zé bù rú wú shū

"To fully trust books is not as good as having no books at all"

聚沙成塔

jù shā chéng tǎ

"Gather sand to build a tower"

将在外,君命有所不受

Jiàng zài wài, jūn mìng yǒu suǒ bù shòu

"When the general is abroad, there are some sovereign commands he need not accept"

将在谋而不在勇,兵在精而不在多

Jiàng zài móu ér bù zài yǒng, bīng zài jīng ér bù zài duō

"A general's strength lies in strategy, not bravery; soldiers should be elite, not numerous"

将相本无种,男儿当自强

Jiàng xiàng běn wú zhǒng, nán ér dāng zì qiáng

"Generals and ministers are not born to it; a man should strengthen himself"

君子之交淡如水,小人之交甘若醴

Jūnzǐ zhī jiāo dàn rú shuǐ, xiǎorén zhī jiāo gān ruò lǐ

"The friendship of gentlemen is as plain as water; the friendship of petty people is as sweet as wine"

君子和而不同,小人同而不和

Jūn zǐ hé ér bù tóng, xiǎo rén tóng ér bù hé

"The gentleman seeks harmony without sameness; the petty person seeks sameness without harmony"

君子成人之美,不成人之恶

Jūn zǐ chéng rén zhī měi, bù chéng rén zhī è

"The gentleman helps others perfect their good; he does not help others' evil"

君子爱财,取之有道

Jūnzǐ ài cái, qǔ zhī yǒu dào

"A gentleman loves wealth, but acquires it through proper means"

君子不器

Jūn zǐ bù qì

"The gentleman is not a vessel (a tool, an instrument)"

君子求诸己,小人求诸人

Jūn zǐ qiú zhū jǐ, xiǎo rén qiú zhū rén

"The gentleman seeks from himself; the petty person seeks from others"

君子有三乐

Jūn zǐ yǒu sān lè

"The gentleman has three joys"

君子喻于义,小人喻于利

Jūn zǐ yù yú yì, xiǎo rén yù yú lì

"The gentleman is guided by righteousness; the petty man is guided by profit"

君子一言,驷马难追

Jūnzǐ yī yán, sì mǎ nán zhuī

"Once a gentleman speaks, even four horses cannot chase it back"

得鱼忘筌

Dé yú wàng quán

"Catch the fish, forget the trap"

授人以鱼不如授人以渔

Shòu rén yǐ yú bùrú shòu rén yǐ yú

"Giving someone a fish is not as good as teaching them to fish"

顺其自然

Shùn qí zì rán

"Follow nature's course; let nature take its course"

金玉良言

Jīn yù liáng yán

"Words as precious as gold and jade"

金无足赤,人无完人

Jīn wú zú chì, rén wú wán rén

"Gold is never pure red; humans are never complete"

善恶到头终有报,只争来早与来迟

Shàn è dào tóu zhōng yǒu bào, zhǐ zhēng lái zǎo yǔ lái chí

"Good and evil will eventually be repaid; it's only a matter of sooner or later"

良药苦口利于病

Liáng yào kǔ kǒu lì yú bìng

"Good medicine tastes bitter but helps the illness"

善有善报,恶有恶报

Shàn yǒu shàn bào, è yǒu è bào

"Good deeds bring good rewards; evil deeds bring evil retribution"

人善被人欺,马善被人骑

Rén shàn bèi rén qī, mǎ shàn bèi rén qí

"Good people get bullied; good horses get ridden"

善有善报,恶有恶报;不是不报,时辰未到

Shàn yǒu shàn bào, è yǒu è bào; bùshì bù bào, shíchén wèi dào

"Good deeds bring good rewards, evil deeds bring evil rewards; if retribution hasn't come, the time hasn't arrived"

好的开始是成功的一半

Hǎo de kāishǐ shì chénggōng de yībàn

"A good beginning is half of success"

酒香不怕巷子深

Jiǔ xiāng bù pà xiàng zi shēn

"Good wine fears no deep alley"

千里送鹅毛,礼轻情意重

Qiān lǐ sòng é máo, lǐ qīng qíng yì zhòng

"It's the thought that counts—the sentiment matters more than the gift"

来说是非者,便是是非人

Lái shuō shì fēi zhě, biàn shì shì fēi rén

"Those who come to tell you about rights and wrongs are themselves the people who stir up trouble"

治大国,若烹小鲜

Zhì dà guó, ruò pēng xiǎo xiān

"Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish"

结草衔环

Jié cǎo xián huán

"Tying grass and holding a ring in the mouth"

大人者,不失其赤子之心者也

Dà rén zhě, bù shī qí chì zǐ zhī xīn zhě yě

"The great person is one who has not lost the heart of their infant self"

大巧若拙

Dà qiǎo ruò zhuō

"Great skill appears clumsy"

大音希声,大象无形

Dà yīn xī shēng, dà xiàng wú xíng

"The greatest sound is rarely heard; the greatest form has no shape"

名师出高徒

Míng shī chū gāo tú

"A famous teacher produces outstanding students"

大器晚成

Dà qì wǎn chéng

"Great vessels take long to complete"

厚德载物

Hòu dé zài wù

"Great virtue sustains and bears all things"

大智若愚,大巧若拙

Dà zhì ruò yú, dà qiǎo ruò zhuō

"Great wisdom appears like foolishness; great skill appears like clumsiness"
