盲人摸象

Máng rén mō xiàng

"Blind men touch an elephant"

青出于蓝而胜于蓝

Qīng chū yú lán ér shèng yú lán

"Blue comes from the indigo plant yet surpasses it"

船到桥头自然直

Chuán dào qiáo tóu zì rán zhí

"When the boat reaches the bridge, it will naturally straighten"

身在曹营心在汉

Shēn zài Cáo yíng xīn zài Hàn

"Physically present in Cao's camp, but one's heart remains with Han"

身正不怕影子斜

Shēn zhèng bù pà yǐngzi xié

"If your body is upright, you need not fear that your shadow is crooked"

书山有路勤为径,学海无涯苦作舟

Shū shān yǒu lù qín wéi jìng, xué hǎi wú yá kǔ zuò zhōu

"The mountain of books has a path: diligence; the sea of learning has no shore: hard work is the boat"

生于忧患,死于安乐

Shēng yú yōu huàn, sǐ yú ān lè

"Life springs from hardship and struggle; death comes from comfort and ease"

早餐吃好,午餐吃饱,晚餐吃少

Zǎocān chī hǎo, wǔcān chī bǎo, wǎncān chī shǎo

"Eat a good breakfast, eat a full lunch, eat a light dinner"

桥归桥,路归路

Qiáo guī qiáo, lù guī lù

"A bridge returns to being a bridge, a road returns to being a road"

兄弟同心,其利断金

Xiōngdì tóngxīn, qí lì duàn jīn

"When brothers share the same heart, their sharpness can cut through gold"

死了张屠夫,不吃混毛猪

Sǐ le Zhāng túfū, bù chī hùn máo zhū

"Even if Zhang the butcher dies, we won't eat pork with hair still on it"

不可同日而语

Bù kě tóng rì ér yǔ

"Things so different they cannot be compared"

舍不得孩子套不住狼

Shě bu de háizi tào bu zhù láng

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

夏虫不可以语于冰者,笃于时也

Xià chóng bù kě yǐ yǔ yú bīng zhě, dǔ yú shí yě

"A summer insect cannot be spoken to about ice — it is bound by its season"

人不可貌相

Rén bù kě mào xiàng

"Do not judge people by their outward appearance"

有眼不识泰山

Yǒu yǎn bù shí Tài Shān

"To have eyes yet fail to recognize Mount Tai."

慎终如始

Shèn zhōng rú shǐ

"Be careful at the end as at the beginning"

大意失荆州

Dà yì shī Jīngzhōu

"Carelessness caused the loss of Jingzhou"

鲤鱼跳龙门

Lǐ yú tiào lóng mén

"The carp leaps over the Dragon Gate"

车到山前必有路

Chē dào shān qián bì yǒu lù

"When the cart reaches the mountain, there will surely be a road"

猫哭老鼠

Māo kū lǎo shǔ

"The cat cries over the mouse"

欲擒故纵

Yù qín gù zòng

"Want to catch, therefore release"

擒贼先擒王

Qín zéi xiān qín wáng

"To catch thieves, first catch the king"

辅车相依

Fǔ chē xiāng yī

"Cheek and jawbone depend on each other"

楚材晋用

Chǔ cái Jìn yòng

"Chu talent used by Jin"

城门失火,殃及池鱼

Chéng mén shī huǒ, yāng jí chí yú

"When the city gate catches fire, the fish in the moat suffer disaster"

泥菩萨过江——自身难保

Ní pú sà guò jiāng — zì shēn nán bǎo

"A clay bodhisattva crossing the river — can barely protect itself"

为人不做亏心事,半夜敲门心不惊

Wéi rén bù zuò kuī xīn shì, bànyè qiāomén xīn bù jīng

"If you don't do things that shame your conscience, your heart won't panic when someone knocks at midnight"

巧言令色,鲜矣仁

Qiǎo yán lìng sè, xiǎn yǐ rén

"Clever words and an ingratiating expression are seldom benevolent"

聪明在于勤奋,天才在于积累

Cōngmíng zài yú qínfèn, tiāncái zài yú jīlěi

"Cleverness lies in diligence; genius lies in accumulation"

缘木求鱼

Yuán mù qiú yú

"Climbing a tree to seek fish"

衣不如新,人不如故

Yī bùrú xīn, rén bùrú gù

"Clothes are best when new, but people are best when old"

笨鸟先飞

bèn niǎo xiān fēi

"The clumsy bird flies first"

出生入死

Chū shēng rù sǐ

"Coming forth into life, entering death"

人比人,气死人

Rén bǐ rén, qì sǐ rén

"Comparing people makes you angry enough to die"

孔夫子搬家——净是书(输)

Kǒng Fūzǐ bān jiā — jìng shì shū (shū)

"Confucius moves house — nothing but books (a pun: 'books' sounds identical to 'losses')"

胜人者有力,自胜者强

Shèng rén zhě yǒu lì, zì shèng zhě qiáng

"He who conquers others has strength; he who conquers himself is mighty"

庖丁解牛

Páo Dīng jiě niú

"Cook Ding carving an ox"

照葫芦画瓢

Zhào hú lu huà piáo

"Copying the gourd to draw the dipper."

正人先正己

Zhèng rén xiān zhèng jǐ

"To correct others, first correct yourself"

礼尚往来

Lǐ shàng wǎng lái

"Courtesy demands reciprocity"

庄稼一枝花,全靠粪当家

Zhuāngjia yī zhī huā, quán kào fèn dāngjiā

"Crops bloom like a single flower, all依靠ing on manure to manage the household"

过五关,斩六将

Guò wǔ guān, zhǎn liù jiàng

"Crossing five mountain passes and slaying six enemy generals"

累卵之危

Lěi luǎn zhī wēi

"The danger of eggs piled atop one another"

道法自然

Dào fǎ zì rán

"The Dao follows the pattern of nature"

不敢越雷池一步

Bù gǎn yuè léi chí yī bù

"Afraid to overstep established boundaries"

敢作敢当

Gǎn zuò gǎn dāng

"Dare to act, dare to bear the responsibility"

死马当作活马医

Sǐ mǎ dāngzuò huó mǎ yī

"Treat a dead horse as if it were alive"

死猪不怕开水烫

Sǐ zhū bù pà kāi shuǐ tàng

"A dead pig does not fear scalding water"

人固有一死,或重于泰山,或轻于鸿毛

Rén gù yǒu yī sǐ, huò zhòng yú Tài Shān, huò qīng yú hóng máo

"Every person must die; some deaths are weightier than Mount Tai, others lighter than a goose feather"
