人算不如天算
Rén suàn bùrú tiān suàn
"Human calculation cannot match heaven's calculation"
人为财死,鸟为食亡
Rén wèi cái sǐ, niǎo wèi shí wáng
"Humans die for wealth, birds perish for food."
杞人忧天
Qǐ rén yōu tiān
"The man of Qi worries about the sky"
螳臂当车
Táng bì dāng chē
"The mantis raises its arm to block the chariot"
螳螂捕蝉,黄雀在后
Tángláng bǔ chán, huángquè zài hòu
"The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind"
集腋成裘
Jí yè chéng qiú
"Gather armpit fur to make a coat"
众人拾柴火焰高
Zhongren shichai huoyan gao
"When many people gather firewood, the flames burn high"
刻舟求剑
Kè zhōu qiú jiàn
"Carve a mark on the boat to seek the sword"
娶妻娶德不娶色,交友交心不交财
Qǔ qī qǔ dé bù qǔ sè, jiāo yǒu jiāo xīn bù jiāo cái
"Marry a wife for virtue, not beauty; make friends for their hearts, not their wealth"
肉包子打狗——有去无回
Ròu bāozi dǎ gǒu — yǒu qù wú huí
"A meat bun thrown at a dog — gone, no return"
瓜田不纳履,李下不整冠
Guā tián bù nà lǚ, lǐ xià bù zhěng guān
"In a melon patch, don't bend to adjust your shoes; under a plum tree, don't reach up to fix your hat"
瓜无滚圆,人无十全
Guā wú gǔn yuán, rén wú shí quán
"No melon is perfectly round; no person is completely perfect"
亡羊补牢,为时未晚
Wáng yáng bǔ láo, wéi shí wèi wǎn
"Mend the fence after losing a sheep—it's not too late"
失之毫厘,谬以千里
Shī zhī háolí, miù yǐ qiānlǐ
"A tiny error at the start leads to a massive mistake at the end"
过了这个村,没了这个店
Guò le zhè ge cūn, méi le zhè ge diàn
"Opportunities are fleeting; seize them when they appear"
闹里有钱,静处安身
Nào lǐ yǒu qián, jìng chù ān shēn
"In the noise, there is money; in a quiet place, one finds peace"
有钱能使鬼推磨
Yǒu qián néng shǐ guǐ tuī mò
"With money, you can make the devil turn the millstone"
钱不是万能的,没钱是万万不能的
Qián bù shì wàn néng de, méi qián shì wàn wàn bù néng de
"Money is not omnipotent, but having no money is absolutely impossible."
月到十五光明少,人到中年万事休
Yuè dào shíwǔ guāngmíng shǎo, rén dào zhōngnián wànshì xiū
"After the fifteenth, the moon's brightness fades; at middle age, all endeavors rest"
多个朋友多条路,多个冤家多堵墙
Duō gè péngyǒu duō tiáo lù, duō gè yuānjia duō dǔ qiáng
"One more friend, one more path; one more enemy, one more wall"
朝不保夕
Zhāo bù bǎo xī
"Morning does not guarantee evening"
朝霞不出门,晚霞行千里
Zhāo xiá bù chū mén, wǎn xiá xíng qiān lǐ
"With morning glow, don't go out; with evening glow, travel a thousand miles"

Zhāo Qín mù Chǔ
"Morning Qin, evening Chu"
老鼠过街——人人喊打
Lǎoshǔ guò jiē — rén rén hǎn dǎ
"A mouse crossing the street — everyone shouts to beat it"
游刃有余
Yóu rèn yǒu yú
"Wielding the blade with surplus room"
言多必失
Yán duō bì shī
"Much speech inevitably leads to mistakes"
多言数穷,不如守中
Duō yán shù qióng, bù rú shǒu zhōng
"Many words soon exhaust — better to hold to the center"
得过且过
Dé guò qiě guò
"Just get by and let it pass"
哑巴吃黄连——有苦说不出
Yǎba chī huánglián——yǒu kǔ shuō bù chū
"A mute person eats goldthread—has bitterness but cannot speak of it"
名不正则言不顺
Míng bù zhèng zé yán bù shùn
"If the name is not correct, words will not be accepted"
挨金似金,挨玉似玉
Āi jīn sì jīn, āi yù sì yù
"Near gold, one resembles gold; near jade, one resembles jade"
近朱者赤,近墨者黑
Jìn zhū zhě chì, jìn mò zhě hēi
"Near vermilion, one turns red; near ink, one turns black"
近水知鱼性,近山识鸟音
Jìn shuǐ zhī yú xìng, jìn shān shí niǎo yīn
"Near water, know fish nature; near mountains, recognize bird calls"
不置可否
Bù zhì kě fǒu
"To neither affirm nor deny; to withhold judgment"
外甥打灯笼——照旧(照舅)
Wàisheng dǎ dēnglong — zhào jiù (zhào jiù)
"A nephew holds the lantern — lighting the way for his uncle (a pun: 'lighting the uncle' sounds identical to 'same as before')"
活到老,学到老
Huó dào lǎo, xué dào lǎo
"Live until old age, learn until old age"
新官上任三把火
Xīn guān shàngrèn sān bǎ huǒ
"A new official lights three fires upon taking office"
初生牛犊不怕虎
Chūshēng niúdú bù pà hǔ
"A newborn calf does not fear the tiger"
行百里者半九十
Xíng bǎi lǐ zhě bàn jiǔ shí
"For those traveling a hundred miles, ninety is only half"
离了红萝卜不成席
Lí le hóng luóbo bù chéng xí
"Without red carrots, there's no proper banquet"
覆巢之下无完卵
Fù cháo zhī xià wú wán luǎn
"When a nest is overturned, no eggs remain whole"
人无远虑,必有近忧
Rén wú yuǎn lǜ, bì yǒu jìn yōu
"A person without long-term concerns will surely have near worries"
没有规矩,不成方圆
Méiyǒu guīju, bù chéng fāngyuán
"Without compass and square, you cannot make squares and circles"
此地无银三百两
Cǐ dì wú yín sān bǎi liǎng
"No silver here, three hundred taels"
山中无老虎——猴子称大王
Shān zhōng wú lǎohǔ——hóuzi chēng dàwáng
"When there's no tiger in the mountains, the monkey declares himself king"
君子坦荡荡,小人长戚戚
Jūn zǐ tǎn dàng dàng, xiǎo rén cháng qī qī
"The noble is broad and serene; the petty is always anxious"
不为五斗米折腰
Bù wèi wǔ dǒu mǐ zhé yāo
"Refusing to compromise one's integrity for material gain"
富贵不能淫,贫贱不能移,威武不能屈
Fù guì bù néng yín, pín jiàn bù néng yí, wēi wǔ bù néng qū
"Neither riches nor status can corrupt him; neither poverty nor lowliness can change him; neither power nor force can bend him"
不在其位,不谋其政
Bù zài qí wèi, bù móu qí zhèng
"Don't plan what isn't your position"
不当家不知柴米贵
Bù dāngjiā bù zhī cháimǐ guì
"If you don't manage a household, you won't know how expensive firewood and rice are"
