大智若愚
Dà zhì ruò yú
"Great wisdom appears like foolishness"
贪多嚼不烂
Tān duō jiáo bù làn
"If you're greedy for too much, you won't chew it well"
小葱拌豆腐——一清二白
Xiao cong ban doufu — yi qing er bai
"Green onion mixed with tofu — one clear, two white"
只要功夫深,铁杵磨成针
Zhǐyào gōngfu shēn, tiě chǔ mó chéng zhēn
"If your effort is deep enough, an iron pestle can be ground into a needle"
害人之心不可有,防人之心不可无
hài rén zhī xīn bù kě yǒu, fáng rén zhī xīn bù kě wú
"You should not have the heart to harm others, but you must not lack the heart to guard against them"
枪打出头鸟
Qiāng dǎ chū tóu niǎo
"The gun shoots the bird that sticks its head out"
实干兴邦,空谈误国
Shígàn xīngbāng, kōngtán wùguó
"Practical work revitalizes the nation; empty talk harms the country"
功夫不负有心人
Gōngfu bù fù yǒuxīnrén
"Hard work does not let down the determined person"
自恨枝无叶,莫怨太阳偏
Zì hèn zhī wú yè, mò yuàn tài yáng piān
"Hate your own branch for having no leaves; do not blame the sun for being biased"
知足者富
Zhī zú zhě fù
"He who knows he has enough is rich"
朝闻道,夕死可矣
Zhāo wén dào, xī sǐ kě yǐ
"Hear the Dao in the morning, die in the evening, that is acceptable"
天外有天

"There are heavens beyond heaven"
天无绝人之路

"Heaven never blocks all paths for a person; there is always a way out"
天道酬勤

"Heaven rewards the diligent"

"Heaven's secrets must not be revealed"
天时不如地利,地利不如人和
Tiānshí bùrú dìlì, dìlì bùrú rénhé
"Heaven's timing is not as good as earth's advantage; earth's advantage is not as good as human harmony"
天有不测风云,人有旦夕祸福
Tiān yǒu bù cè fēngyún, rén yǒu dànxī huòfú
"Heaven has unpredictable storms; humans have sudden fortune and misfortune"
天行健,君子以自强不息
Tiān xíng jiàn, jūn zǐ yǐ zì qiáng bù xī
"Heaven's movement is vigorous; the noble one thus strengthens himself without ceasing"
与人方便,自己方便
Yǔ rén fāngbiàn, zìjǐ fāngbiàn
"When you accommodate others, you accommodate yourself"
助人为乐

"Helping others is happiness"
英雄无用武之地

"A hero has no place to display his martial prowess"

"Hidden dragon: do not use"

"Hide your light and nourish the darkness"
上德不德

其身正,不令而行;其身不正,虽令不从
Qí shēn zhèng, bù lìng ér xíng; qí shēn bù zhèng, suī lìng bù cóng
"When his person is upright, he commands without orders; when his person is not upright, even orders are not followed"
打蛇打七寸
Dǎ shé dǎ qī cùn
"When hitting a snake, hit it at seven inches"
老实人常在,狡猾人常败
Lǎoshi rén cháng zài, jiǎohuá rén cháng bài
"Honest people endure; cunning people often fail"
风马牛不相及
Fēng mǎ niú bù xiāng jí
"Wind, horses, and cattle do not reach each other"
人情似纸张张薄,世事如棋局局新
Rén qíng sì zhǐ zhāng zhāng bó, shì shì rú qí jú jú xīn
"Human feelings are like paper—each sheet thin; worldly affairs are like chess—each game new"
江山易改本性难移
Jiāngshān yì gǎi běnxìng nán yí
"Rivers and mountains are easily changed, but one's nature is hard to move"
人往高处走,水往低处流
Rén wǎng gāochù zǒu, shuǐ wǎng dīchù liú
"People climb toward high places; water flows toward low places"
人有悲欢离合,月有阴晴圆缺
Rén yǒu bēi huān lí hé, yuè yǒu yīn qíng yuán quē
"Humans have joy and sorrow, parting and reunion; the moon has dimness and brightness, waxing and waning"
谦谦君子,卑以自牧也
Qiān qiān jūn zǐ, bēi yǐ zì mù yě
"The modest, modest gentleman — he cultivates himself through humility"
寒门出贵子,白屋出公卿
Hán mén chū guìzǐ, bái wū chū gōngqīng
"Poor families produce distinguished sons; humble houses produce high officials"
虚心使人进步,骄傲使人落后
Xūxīn shǐ rén jìnbù, jiāo'ào shǐ rén luòhòu
"Humility makes people advance; pride makes people fall behind"
百尺竿头,更进一步
Bǎi chǐ gān tóu, gèng jìn yī bù
"Even from the top of a hundred-foot pole, take one step further"
百里不同风,千里不同俗
Bǎi lǐ bù tóng fēng, qiān lǐ bù tóng sú
"Within a hundred li the wind differs; within a thousand li customs differ"
伤其十指,不如断其一指
Shāng qí shí zhǐ, bùrú duàn qí yī zhǐ
"Hurting ten of their fingers is not as good as breaking one of their fingers"
我有三宝,持而保之
Wǒ yǒu sān bǎo, chí ér bǎo zhī
"I have three treasures that I hold and keep"
此处不留爷,自有留爷处
Cǐ chù bù liú yé, zì yǒu liú yé chù
"If this place doesn't keep me, there will naturally be a place that will"
难得糊涂

"It is rare to be confused; hard to attain muddle-headedness"
病从口入,祸从口出
Bìng cóng kǒu rù, huò cóng kǒu chū
"Illness enters through the mouth; disaster exits through the mouth"

Yù bù zhuó bù chéng qì
"Jade cannot become a vessel without being carved"
姜太公钓鱼——愿者上钩
Jiāng Tàigōng diào yú — yuàn zhě shàng gōu
"Jiang Taigong fishes — let the willing ones get hooked"
责人之心责己,恕己之心恕人
Zé rén zhī xīn zé jǐ, shù jǐ zhī xīn shù rén
"With the heart that blames others, blame yourself; with the heart that forgives yourself, forgive others"
得道多助,失道寡助
Dé dào duō zhù, shī dào guǎ zhù
"He who finds the Way receives abundant help; he who loses the Way receives little help"
